Reinforcement Solutions

Engineered Reinforcement for Challenging Retaining Wall Applications

Stone Strong® retaining wall systems can be designed using a range of reinforcement methods to accommodate increased wall heights, surcharge loads, poor ground conditions, bridge structures, transport infrastructure, and constrained construction sites. By combining the structural mass of Stone Strong precast concrete blocks with proven reinforcement technologies, engineers can deliver economical, durable, and high-performance retaining wall solutions.

Whether the project requires a mechanically stabilised earth (MSE) wall, steel strip reinforcement, or tieback anchor systems, Stone Strong provides the flexibility to meet demanding geotechnical and structural requirements.

Compatible Reinforcement Systems

  • Geogrids
  • ParaWeb® polyester strap reinforcement
  • Steel strip reinforcement
  • Steel mesh reinforcement
  • Geotextile reinforcement systems

Mechanically Stabilised Earth (MSE) Walls

Stone Strong MSE walls combine large precast concrete facing units with geosynthetic or steel reinforcement extending into the retained soil mass. The reinforced soil zone acts as a gravity structure, allowing walls to achieve significant retained heights while maintaining cost-effective construction.

Benefits

  • Suitable for high retaining walls exceeding traditional gravity wall limitations
  • Reduces foundation loads compared with conventional concrete structures
  • Accommodates differential settlement
  • Utilises locally available backfill materials where suitable
  • Rapid installation with minimal site disruption
  • Ideal for bridge abutments, transport corridors, commercial developments, and embankments

    Steel Strip Reinforcement

Steel strip-reinforced walls have a long history of successful performance in transport, bridge, rail, and infrastructure projects worldwide. Steel strips are mechanically connected to Stone Strong facing units and extend into the engineered backfill to create a stable, reinforced-soil structure.

    Advantages

    • High tensile strength and load capacity
    • Proven long-term performance
    • Suitable for heavily loaded infrastructure applications
    • Effective for bridge abutments and structures subject to dynamic loading
    • Can achieve substantial retained heights

      Compatible Reinforcement Systems

      • Geogrids
      • ParaWeb® polyester strap reinforcement
      • Steel strip reinforcement
      • Steel mesh reinforcement
      • Geotextile reinforcement systems

      Common Uses

      • Urban developments
      • Road widening projects
      • Deep excavations
      • Coastal protection works
      • Infrastructure upgrades within constrained corridors

      Tieback Anchor Systems

Where space constraints prevent the use of traditional reinforced soil zones, Stone Strong walls can be integrated with tieback anchor systems. Anchors are drilled into competent ground behind the wall and connected to the retaining structure to provide additional lateral resistance.

      Benefits

      • Ideal for restricted sites and property boundaries
      • Minimises excavation requirements
      • Suitable where reinforcement lengths are limited
      • Allows construction adjacent to existing infrastructure
      • Effective for steep excavations and temporary works

      Flexible Solutions for Complex Projects

Stone Strong systems can utilise a single reinforcement method or combine multiple reinforcement technologies within the same project. For example, MSE reinforcement may be used for primary wall sections while tieback anchors provide support in constrained areas, creating an optimised and cost-effective design.

By offering compatibility with a wide range of reinforcement systems, Stone Strong delivers the flexibility engineers require to overcome site constraints while maintaining structural performance, construction efficiency, and long-term durability.

      Typical Applications

      • Bridge abutments
      • Highway and rail infrastructure
      • Embankment stabilisation
      • Commercial developments
      • Industrial facilities
      • Port and marine structures
      • Land development projects
      • Temporary and permanent retaining structures

Engineered for strength, flexibility, and long-term performance in demanding retaining wall applications.
